Suez

/suːˈɛz/ proper noun

Definition

A city in Egypt and the name of the Suez Canal, a crucial artificial waterway connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea, allowing ships to bypass Africa.

Etymology

From Arabic 'Al-Suways,' originally named after the Suez region. The Suez Canal was constructed between 1859-1869 by the French engineer Ferdinand de Lesseps, making it one of the world's most important shipping routes.

Kelly Says

The Suez Canal is so strategically important that when a giant ship got stuck there in 2021 (Ever Given incident), it cost the world $9-12 billion per day in trade losses—it's basically the highway that connects Europe to Asia without sailing all the way around Africa.
