T-tauri star

/ti ˈtɔri stɑr/ noun

Definition

A young, pre-main sequence star that is still contracting gravitationally and has not yet begun stable hydrogen fusion in its core. These stars are characterized by strong stellar winds, variability in brightness, and often have circumstellar disks of gas and dust.

Etymology

Named after T Tauri, the prototype star in the constellation Taurus where this class was first identified. The classification was established in the 1940s as astronomers studied variable stars in star-forming regions.

Kelly Says

T Tauri stars are cosmic teenagers - they're no longer babies (protostars) but haven't quite reached stellar maturity! These young stars are still settling into their final form, often surrounded by planetary disks where new worlds might be forming, just like our solar system did 4.6 billion years ago.
