Definition
A building divided into separate apartments or rooms for rent, especially one that is run-down and overcrowded. Originally, any property held by a tenant.
Etymology
From Medieval Latin tenementum, derived from tenere (to hold) + -mentum (result of action, thing produced). The suffix -ment indicates 'something that is held' or 'the result of holding.' It entered Middle English via Anglo-Norman in the 14th century, originally meaning any held property before narrowing to refer to rental housing.
Kelly Says
A tenement is literally 'something held' - originally any property a tenant held from a landlord! This connects directly to 'tenant' (one who holds) and 'tenure' (the act of holding). All three words show how tenere evolved to describe property relationships and legal holding.
