The best of both worlds

Definition

A situation where you can enjoy the advantages of two different things at the same time without having to choose between them. It describes an ideal scenario combining multiple benefits.

Etymology

This phrase has philosophical roots dating to the 17th century, originally referring to enjoying both earthly pleasures and spiritual rewards. Voltaire used a similar concept in 'Candide' with 'best of all possible worlds,' but the modern 'both worlds' version became popular in the 20th century.

Kelly Says

The phrase reflects humanity's eternal desire to have our cake and eat it too - to escape the usual trade-offs life demands. What makes it particularly appealing is that it acknowledges we normally must choose between good options, making those rare moments when we don't have to choose feel especially precious.
