Theatrics

/θiˈætrɪks/ noun

Definition

Exaggerated, dramatic behavior designed to attract attention or create an effect; artificial or overly emotional display of feelings.

Etymology

From Greek 'theatron' (place for viewing) + suffix '-ics'. Originally referred to the art of theater, but by the 18th century had acquired the negative connotation of artificial or excessive dramatic behavior.

Kelly Says

The word's journey from describing legitimate stage performance to criticizing attention-seeking behavior reflects our complex relationship with performance - we admire drama in theaters but often condemn it in real life.
