Definition
To become thicker or denser, or to make something thicker; the point in a story where things become more complicated.
Etymology
From Old English 'þicce' (thick) with the suffix '-en' (to make or become). Germanic root related to similar words in Dutch and German. The figurative use for 'making a story more complicated' comes from Victorian novels.
Kelly Says
The phrase 'the plot thickens' became wildly popular in the 1700s-1800s when serialized novels would leave readers in suspense—writers literally used 'thickens' to describe how mystery compounds. Now we use it for any situation getting more complex or dramatic!
