Trompe l'oeil

/trɒmp ˈlɔɪ/ noun

Definition

A technique of visual illusion in art, especially painting, that makes depicted objects appear three-dimensional and real.

Etymology

From French 'trompe l'oeil' (deceives the eye). Ancient Greek painters competed to paint the most realistic still lifes — birds supposedly flew into Zeuxis's painted grapes.

Kelly Says

Art so realistic it TRICKS YOUR EYES! Ancient Greek birds tried to eat PAINTED grapes! Modern muralists paint fake windows on walls that people try to open! Art's oldest prank is still fooling people 2500 years later! 🎨👁️
