Vamps

/væmps/ noun

Definition

The front upper parts of shoes or boots, or seductive women who use their charm to manipulate men.

Etymology

From Old French 'vant' (before) + 'pied' (foot), originally describing the front section of a shoe or boot. Later, 'vamp' evolved to mean a seductive woman because such women metaphorically 'dressed up' or embellished themselves.

Kelly Says

Silent film actress Theda Bara's 1915 role as 'A Fool There Was' popularized the 'vamp'—a dangerous seductress—so effectively that the word became linked to femme fatales for an entire century of popular culture.

Ethical Language Guidance

Gender History

Shortened from 'vampire,' applied to seductive women as predatory archetype from early 20th century cinema. Encodes female sexuality as dangerous and duplicitous, distinct from male seduction portrayals.

Inclusive Usage

Avoid describing women. Use 'seductress,' 'temptress,' or actor name instead. If historically referencing film/literature, contextualize the gendered stereotype.

Inclusive Alternatives

["seductress (context-aware)","femme fatale (explicit historical/literary reference)","character name"]

Empowerment Note

Women in early cinema were constrained to moral binaries (virgin/vamp); reclaiming 'vamp' requires explicit decoupling from damnation narratives.
