Definition
People from the western part of a region or country, especially referring to people from Western Europe or North America.
Etymology
From Old English 'westerne' meaning 'of the west,' derived from 'west.' The suffix '-erner' added to create 'westerner' (a person), and '-s' makes it plural.
Kelly Says
The whole idea of 'East vs. West' was hugely shaped by colonial powers dividing the world into hemispheres, so calling someone a 'Westerner' actually carries centuries of that historical thinking.
