Yuma

/ˈjumə/ noun

Definition

A member of a Native American people originally living along the Colorado River in Arizona and California. Also refers to their Yuman language.

Etymology

From the Quechan word 'yahmayo,' meaning 'son of the chief' or possibly 'people of the river.' Spanish colonizers adapted this as 'Yuma,' though the people prefer their traditional name 'Quechan.'

Kelly Says

The Yuma/Quechan people were master agriculturalists who developed sophisticated irrigation systems along the Colorado River centuries before European contact. Their strategic location made them key players in regional trade networks, controlling river crossings and commerce between California and the Southwest.
