Dihydrogen

/daɪˈhaɪdrədʒən/ noun

Definition

The molecular form of hydrogen gas (H₂), consisting of two hydrogen atoms bonded together, which is the primary form of hydrogen found in nature.

Etymology

From 'di-' (two) + 'hydrogen' (the element). While 'hydrogen gas' is the common term, 'dihydrogen' became standard in IUPAC chemical nomenclature to clearly distinguish the molecule from monatomic hydrogen.

Kelly Says

Dihydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, but chemists had to invent the term 'dihydrogen' because the single-atom version (monatomic hydrogen) is so rare it barely exists naturally—it's a naming problem that reveals how chemistry works!
