Definition
Past tense of exhort; strongly urged or encouraged someone to do something.
Etymology
From Latin exhortatus, past participle of exhortari. The verb entered English in the 14th century through religious and legal contexts where persuasion was formal and important.
Kelly Says
Medieval priests exhorted congregations regularly, and this word became so associated with passionate religious speech that it still carries that weight today.
