Moos

/muːz/ verb

Definition

Makes the deep, low sound that cattle make; third-person singular present or plural form of 'moo.'

Etymology

From Old English mu or mu-an, an onomatopoeia directly imitating the sound a cow makes. The word has remained nearly unchanged for over 1000 years because it's purely imitative of nature.

Kelly Says

Onomatopoeia like 'moo' works so well that cows in different countries sound almost identical—but humans describe them differently! English speakers hear 'moo,' while Spanish speakers hear 'mu' and Japanese speakers hear 'mo mo'—same cow, different languages, different ears.
