Rubles

/ˈruːbəlz/ noun

Definition

The plural of ruble, the basic unit of currency used in Russia and some other countries.

Etymology

From Russian 'rubl' (рубль), possibly derived from the word 'rubit' meaning 'to cut,' as early rubles were pieces cut from silver bars. The word has been used since the 14th century.

Kelly Says

Early rubles were literally 'chop sticks' of silver—merchants would cut exact pieces of silver to match a price, which is why the ruble's name means 'to chop'!
