You reap what you sow

Definition

The consequences of your actions, whether good or bad, will eventually come back to you.

Etymology

This phrase has biblical origins, appearing in Galatians 6:7: 'Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.' The agricultural metaphor was perfect for ancient audiences who understood that the quality and type of seeds planted directly determined the harvest.

Kelly Says

This saying appears in virtually every culture with agriculture, showing how universal the concept is - the Hindu and Buddhist concept of karma, the Chinese saying 'plant melons, get melons; plant beans, get beans,' and countless others. Modern psychology calls this the 'law of cause and effect' in human behavior.
