Definition
Did something again; past tense of the verb 'redo,' meaning to do something over.
Etymology
From 're-' (again, from Latin) + 'did' (past tense of 'do,' from Old English 'don'). The prefix 're-' became productive in English for creating verbs meaning repetition. 'Redo' as a standalone word became common in the 1800s.
Kelly Says
The prefix 're-' is one of the most powerful tools in English—it can attach to almost any verb and create a new meaning, which is why we have 'redo,' 'rewind,' 'restart'—all intuitively understood without explanation!
